As of 12 January 2010, the number of persons affected by the devastating flooding in Southeast and Central Queensland was estimated at 127,000 persons, of which were 17,500 families in Brisbane alone. About 18,000 Filipinos reside in Queensland, mostly immigrant families. There are about 2,000 Filipino expatriate workers (457 visa holders) and over a thousand Filipino students in this state.
Mauro Somodio, who resides in Coopers Plain QLD, reports that as of 13 January there are no reports of casualties from the Filipino-Australian community. Mr Somodio has made the following situational report:
- Brisbane: Six Filipino families are sheltered in the Queensland Sports and Athletic Centre (ANZ Stadium) evacuation centre. No confirmed information about Filipinos in the RNA Showgrounds evacuation centre.
- Ipswich: An undetermined number of Filipino families are sheltered in the evacuation here. No information at the time of this writing.
- Toowoomba: Reports that Filipinos escaped the floodwaters. Property lost or damaged.
- Lockyer Valley: No information at the time of this writing.
- Rockhampton: Ten (10) Filipino families evacuated and are staying with other families on safe ground. No Filipino casualties.
The situation of Filipinos in other areas was also reported:
- Caboolture: No information at the time of this writing.
- Chinchilla: All Filipinos safe.
- Clifton: All Filipinos safe.
- Dalby: All Filipinos safe.
- Emerald: All Filipinos safe.
- Gold Coast: All Filipinos safe.
- Gympie: One Filipino family evacuated and is staying with another family on safe graound.
- Jimbour: All Filipinos safe.
- Millmeran: All Filipinos safe.
- Oakey: All Filipinos safe.
- Roma: All Filipinos safe. Reports of food shortage.
