When an Australian official has performed a notarization on a document that will be used in the Philippines, the official character of the executing official must be verified both by the Foreign Ministry of Australia and by a consular officer of the Philippines.  The authentication by a Philippine consular officer is necessary in order to give the service legal force and effect in the Philippines.

Authentication is done on documents whose affiant cannot sign the document in the presence of a consular officer. Authentication is also done on documents that are issued by a government agency, corporate office, bank, or institution. The requirements for the Consulate’s authentication of a document are as follows:

      • The original document, which must first undergo authentication by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), which has an Authentication Office at the following locations in NSW.

      • A non-refundable authentication fee to be paid either in cash or postal money order payable to the “Philippine Consulate General”. Refer to Consular  Fees.
      • Photocopy of the document;
      • If the request for authentication is lodged by mail: a self-addressed Express Post or Registered Post envelope (must be of appropriate size to carry the document).
      • If the request for authentication is lodged in person: Documents are received only during consular business hours and are released on the following business day. Applicants may authorize another person to collect processed documents on their behalf. A written authorization and the issued official receipt must be presented upon collection of the document. Alternatively, applicants may arrange for the return of the processed document through courier service (e.g. DHL, TNT, FedEx, TravCour). Or the applicant  may provide a self-addressed Express Post or Registered Post envelope which the Consulate will use to mail the processed document.
